A cultural heritage awaiting discovery

The “Fotogeschichten” series presents four volumes of historical photographs from Switzerland that document life in all its facets over the past decades. Whether architecture and landscape development, working environments in industry and agriculture, documents from art and science, craftsmen or wedding couples, the absurd or the everyday - the images are an important cultural heritage that is still waiting to be discovered and is being made accessible for the first time in a representative selection in this series. The volumes not only document the richness and abundance of these visual testimonies of the past, but also provide an insight into the position of photography as an important cultural technique of modernity.

This unique compilation begins with the volume on north-eastern Switzerland, with material from over 30 archives. It brings together the rural imagery of the north-eastern Swiss cantons with photographic evidence of the industrial age and urban culture. They tell of people and places, things and circumstances and provide an insight into the memory of a society in transition, as it has been preserved in the collections of public archives, but also in science and the rich museum landscape.
