Max Bill was born in 1908 in Winterthur. After his training as silversmith at the Zurich University of the Arts he studied architecture at the Bauhaus in Dessau.

Jakob Bill, the son of Max and Binia Bill, was born in Zurich in 1942. He studied archeology and art history at the University of Zurich and obtained a doctorate in pre- and ancient history in 1971.
