An unforgettable journey between high-tech ports and idyllic scenery
The river Rhine passes through the heart of Europe, from the Alps to the North Sea, which makes it one of the most important trade routes on the continent. Thousands of goods are being loaded, shipped and handled on its waters. The photographer Elke Fischer and the author Sabine Theil decided to take a rather unusual approach to getting to know this huge marketplace. They went onboard a containership and traveled down the Rhine from Basel to Rotterdam, Europe’s largest sea port. What they found was a new perspective on a river that not only passes through idyllic vineyards – a popular postcard picture from the legendary Loreley valley – but also leads to high-tech international transport hubs. The texts and photographs that were created on the journey offer an authentic insight into the realm of containers, lock gates, mighty cranes and gigantic docks. The authors found a world full of technological wonders and impressive industrial sceneries, but they also discovered human excellence, solidarity and camaraderie.
